Africa's largest decor and design forum, Decorex Africa, has partnered with CURBON, a pioneering start-up dedicated to reducing carbon footprints, to take a significant step towards sustainability. By contributing an additional R5 towards carbon credits when purchasing tickets online or at the door, visitors to Decorex Cape Town and Joburg can now actively participate in the fight against climate change. These events are the first decor and design trade shows in the country to take this critical step, reflecting Decorex Africa and RX's commitment to promote sustainability.
The funds raised by visitors will support four climate projects in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces, including Stellenbosch Community Recycling, Kuyasa in Khayelitsha, ReCarbon Hermanus, and ReCarbon Uitenhage (Kariega). These projects work to offset carbon emissions and also promote socio-economic development, such as job creation, community empowerment, and poverty alleviation.
“Carbon offsetting is the process of compensating for your own carbon emissions by supporting projects which reduce greenhouse gas emissions elsewhere. By purchasing carbon credits, individuals and companies can offset their carbon footprint, effectively balancing their emissions with the emissions reduced by these projects,” says Steffen Burrows, Co-founder and Director of CURBON.
CURBON has a distribution agreement with Credible Carbon, a registry that sells credits from projects independently audited against carbon market standards approved by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). To ensure credibility and transparency, Credible Carbon verifies and audits the projects, making sure they adhere to strict UNFCCC-approved standards. This process includes independent third-party auditors assessing the projects and confirming the actual emission reductions achieved. CURBON’s partnership with Credible Carbon guarantees that the climate projects chosen for Decorex Africa are reliable and genuinely contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
“We’re at the start of a sustainability journey,” says RX Africa Managing Director, Carol Weaving, “and as event organisers, RX Africa would like to invite the rest of the industry to come with us. We hope that this first-of-its-kind initiative inspires other events and their attendees to take climate action and contribute towards a positive sustainability transformation in South Africa. By offering our visitors the opportunity to make a climate contribution, we hope to bring about a more responsible and eco-friendly approach to event attendance. We encourage everyone to learn more about carbon credits, carbon offsetting, and the climate projects we support, as we work together to create a greener, more sustainable future.”
Decorex Africa and CURBON's partnership is a significant milestone in the fight against climate change, demonstrating how collaboration between different sectors can promote sustainability and create a positive impact on the environment and society.
